The Eugene Atwood Fund Announces Award Winners and Interest Free Loan Disbursement
STONINGTON – The Eugene Atwood Fund, a private non-profit foundation located in Stonington, CT, has been providing interest-free loans to New London County area students for over one hundred years. Programs include their annual awards as well as interest-free loans for college, trade/tech school or to obtain certification/licensing. Nineteen (19) senior high school students were awarded a total of $35,612 in funding and Charter Oak Federal Credit Union hosted a reception on Tuesday, June 6th to formally award $100,000 in scholarships to 50 deserving high school and college students from the New London and Windham counties.
These students were chosen by a committee that reviewed over 160 applications to their 2023 Community Giving Scholarship Program. During the reception, 45 community minded students were recognized for their academic achievements as well as creativity in answering this year’s essay question, “You were just gifted $50,000, but you can’t spend a dime on yourself. “Nearly $270,000 has been awarded over the past three years, benefitting over 130 students in eastern Connecticut,” said Brian A. Orenstein, Charter Oak’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “Our scholarship program has alleviated some of the financial burden associated with pursuing a Oct. 22 fundraiser for Sofia Sees Hope to feature Jean Bennett M.D., Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Mystic, CT – Dr. Jean Bennett, M.D., Ph.D., a groundbreaking researcher from the University of Pennsylvania who is working to cure blindness, will be the keynote speaker at this year’s Dinner in the Dark event to benefit local charity Sofia Sees Hope.
In its first two years, Dinner in the Dark raised more than $130,000 to fund research into rare retinal diseases.
